I · The calf

One black hide, dyed right through.

Full-grain calf, dyed in the drum so a scratch shows black, not brown, then pressed with a woven grain by hand.

II · The brass

A scalloped mouth, edged in brass.

Fourteen scallops piped in brass along the opening, eighteen studs, and buckles filed until they close without a click.

III · The hart

The stag comes with it.

Every bag carries the house hart: cast brass, two freshwater pearls and a tassel of thirty-one fine chains.

IV · Carried

Made to be carried, not kept.

Rolled handles that soften to one grip in about a month, and brass feet so it can stand on stone.

V · The Hart bag

Set down in the last of the light.

We make one bag. It is cut from a single black calf hide, edged in brass, sewn with two needles and one waxed thread, and signed under the flap by the person who closed the last seam. When the season's hides run out, so do we.

The scallop edge

The opening is cut in fourteen scallops with a template, then piped with a brass wire folded into the calf so the edge never frays.

A day with it

Dawn to golden hour

We didn't shoot the Hart on a model's arm for a minute. We followed one bag through one day, and kept the frames.
