A small practice. We take on four or five projects a year so that the person you meet at the briefing is the person on site when the concrete goes in.
A long low bar of board-marked concrete set into the slope, so the roof reads as another field from the road above.
Larch, untreated, left to silver. It will look better in fifteen years than it does now, which was the brief.
A ruined shell kept as a ruin, with a new steel-and-glass box slotted inside it that touches the old walls in four places.
Two rooms and a roof light, which is all it needed. The hard part was persuading everyone it was all it needed.
The practice
How it runs
A long conversation and a slow walk of the site. We do not draw anything in the first three weeks.
Physical models at 1:50. Screens flatten things, and the decisions that matter here are about light and weight.
We run the planning process ourselves rather than handing it to a consultant, because the drawings and the argument are the same thing.
On site weekly, minimum. Detailing gets resolved in front of the work, not in an email thread.
