Surface

Heavy thingscan still rise.

A humpback weighs thirty tonnes and still leaves the water. Some days that is the only argument worth holding onto.

What this is

Plainly: what this is.

A quiet page for a hard day. Nothing to sign up for, nothing that tracks you.

  • It is not treatment. Surface is a calm place to pause. It does not diagnose anything and it is not a substitute for a doctor, a therapist, or a crisis service.
  • It asks nothing of you. No account, no questionnaire, no streak to keep. You can close the tab at any point and nothing is lost.
  • It does not promise. A breathing exercise will not fix a week. It can make the next ten minutes more bearable, which is sometimes the whole task.

Three small ways in.

Pick whichever is nearest. None of them is better than the others, and none of them has to work.

A whale rising through cloud beneath a crescent moon

Breathe once, properly

One paced minute below. Longer out than in — that part is what settles a racing chest, and it works whether or not you believe it will.

A whale gliding through open dusk sky

Put it outside your head

Write the thing down somewhere — paper, notes app, a message you never send. A named worry is smaller than a circling one.

A whale descending toward a calm sea at sunrise

Tell one person

Not everyone. One. The point is not advice, it is that somebody else now knows where you are.

One minute.

In for four, hold for two, out for six. Follow the circle, or just watch it — sitting still and looking at something slow is most of the benefit.

Ready when you are

If today is worse than that — if you are thinking about harming yourself, or you do not feel safe — please contact your local emergency number or a crisis line in your country now. They are staffed by people who want the call. This page is not a substitute for one, and it would rather you left it open in a tab and rang.
